Due Process? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Remember the cries of outrage when people found their names on terrorist watch lists and weren’t allowed to board planes? The ACLU has a page here that discusses it and even filed suit in 2004 challenging the no fly list.

But what about when it comes to guns? Well, Senator Frank Lautenberg and Representative Peter King don’t give a rats ass about constitutional protections then. They’re sponsoring a bill that would prevent the people on terrorist watch lists from purchasing firearms even if they are legally allowed to do so.

They’re using all the right language of course. “Common sense” as well as the word “loophole” and most people will not bat an eye when it comes to this kind of legislation. “Why should somebody on a terrorist watch list be allowed to buy a gun?”, they’ll ask.

I would respond, “Well, why should somebody on terrorist watch list be allowed to fly on an airplane? I guess you would have no problem with any law enforcement agency not having to obtain a warrant to search the home or car of people on terrorist watch lists? I supposed you wouldn’t be opposed to the government be able to go into the home of anybody on a terrorist watch list and seizing whatever they like? I mean, after all. They are on a terrorist watch list, correct?”

Granted, some people wouldn’t care and they’re the kind of people who would gladly give up freedom and liberty for safety and free healthcare. But if President Bush or a Senator such as Sam Brownback or John Kyl proposed legislation that would allow for any law enforcement agency to conduct searches of peoples homes, cars and places of business without a warrant simply for being on a terrorist watch list, the left would be apoplectic.
